OSHAWA PAPER SHUTS DOWN

Nine months after the demise of the 123-year old Oshawa Times, the fledgling Oshawa Independent has been forced to close down. The Independent, which was published twice a week, had 5,000 subscribers. The paper was created during a three-week strike with Thomson Corp. in November that brought about the end of the Times. It received $350,000 from the Communications, Energy, and Paperworkers Union of Canada, but could not sell enough advertising to survive.
