BIDS MADE FOR MULTICULTURAL FM STATIONS
By Adnews Staff
Vancouver and Calgary will open their ears to two new multicultural music FM stations, if applications are accepted by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission. Fairchild Holdings group which has the ethnic AM radio station CJVB in Vancouver, and Roger Charest of AM station CKER in Edmonton, have both applied for ethnic stations that will concentrate on playing more music and less talk. Both plan to have a broad market approach towards various ethnic groups, with the Chinese-language market expected to be the main revenue generator. The operators of the two proposed stations expect to share some resources and programming, but most content will be very local. Both will operate under a new company, that has yet to be incorporated. Following normal procedure, he CRTC has called for other applications, and a public hearing will follow.
