IBM THINKING SMALL

U.S.-based International Business Machines Corp. unveiled a new initiative last week designed to better-serve the needs of small businesses. The computer giant said it plans to spend over $100 million worldwide, including several million in Canada, to help small businesses trying to incorporate computer technology into their operations. In Canada, IBM Canada Ltd. of Markham, Ont. has set up a Small Business Division. The new unit has already opened an IBM Canada Small Business Solutions Centre and launched a Small Business Solutions Web site. Located in Toronto, the Small Business Centre will give companies access to IBM Canada advisors through a 1-800 number. Working in English, French or Chinese, the advisors will work on designing strategies between customers and IBM business partners. The Web site's goal is to act as a resource centre for small business owners. Featuring various industry computing solutions, a library of periodical resources and information on how small businesses can use the Internet, the site also allows for feedback and comments. In Canada, IBM is promoting the new initiative through a national print campaign and a sponsorship program. The print ads, handled by Ogilvy & Mather of Toronto, began running last week. Goodman Communications Inc. of Toronto is handling PR for the launch. The sponsorship program will involve IBM supporting a variety of business and cultural groups.
