GROUP SLAMS SEAL SLAUGHTER

Ottawa-based International Fund for Animal Welfare Canada ran a national print ad yesterday opposing the federal government's expansion of the seal hunt. IFAW says that although the government promised a humane hunt, nearly 200,000 baby seals were killed in three months in 1996. Killing methods included live skinnings, sharpened steel hooks, gunfire and clubbing. Laurie Kingston, IFAW Canada communications co-ordinator, said there would be future ads condemning the seal hunt, although the IFAW had no immediate plans. Harrod & Mirlin Ltd. of Toronto handled the advertising.
