INTERNET GROUP WEAVING WEB OF SUPPORT

An association trying to establish professional standards and certification for Web site developers is getting a positive response from Internet-associated companies. Founded in October, 1996, Toronto-based Institute of Professional Webmasters includes representatives from the Internet, computer and educational fields. Some of its planned services include educational certification programs, conferences, Internet resources and databases, discounts, a job bank and contract referral services. Companies that have committed to supporting the program's launch include Hookup Communications, Microsoft Canada, Silicon Graphics, istar Internet and Stafford Technology Institute. The first module of the IPW program has already been taught at the Stafford Technology Institute. The program will be offered at Toronto and Hamilton, Ont. colleges before spreading to approved colleges across Canada. Eventually the Institute hopes to establish international chapters. The group says it has already received inquiries from the U.S. and Korea.
