7-Eleven begins Pokemon AR promotion

Convenience store chain 7-Eleven has begun a promotion in Canada tied to the upcoming release of the Warner Bros. film Pokémon Detective Pikachu. The campaign consists of in-store augmented reality elements that can be viewed using mobile device and the 7-Eleven application. The software includes a feature called the “Ryme City Neighbourhood Watch,” which consumers can use to search for missing Pokémon characters weekly. Participants will receive credits for 7-Eleven products including drinks, taquitos and chicken wings. Users can also take photographs via the app to share on social media sites. In addition, members of the chain’s 7Rewards loyalty program can enter to win free coffee or Slurpees for a year by scanning eligible purchases. The movie will debut on May 10.

“Pokémon Detective Pikachu is a great entertainment tie-in for 7-Eleven because it appeals to so many of our customers, kids, Gen Z, millennials,” said Tarang Sethia, vice-president of digital customer experience at 7‑Eleven. “Millennials, who played the original video game 20 years ago, are parents now and can enjoy the Pokémon phenomenon all over again with their kids. The entire Pokémon franchise launched as a video game, making it the perfect vehicle to create experiences that maximize the new and growing AR capabilities in the 7-Eleven app.”
