COMPAQ TO ENHANCES PRESARIO LINE

Houston-based Compaq Computer Corp. will introduce five new Presario computers to the worldwide market later this month, four of which use the new Intel Pentium Processor with MMX technology. Called the Presario 4000 and 8000 Series PCs, the machines also feature 16X CD-ROM drives, 33.6Kbps modems and up to 4.0 gigabyte hard drives. Canadian advertising plans for the new machines are still being worked out. It will be created by Ammirati & Puris/Lintas of Toronto. Separately, Compaq Canada launched a radio promotion this week to support its Armada 1100 notebook promotion which has been running since November. The campaign will run in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. It features two 30-second commercials which function as a pair. In the first spot, the announcer talks about Compaq's offer, in which a customer receives a free Ositech Jack of Diamonds 28.8 modem/ethernet PC card or eight megabytes of RAM with the purchase of an Armada 1100 notebook computer. The announcer talks about the dilemma of trying to choose which one he wants. The commercial closes with the announcer stating that it's a tough decision and that he'll need more time. There is then a break with several commercials in between and the second 30-second spot appears. The announcer indicates that he's back and starts talking about the offer again, in addition to the philosophical dilemma in choosing between the free modem or memory. He then closes by asking for an extension. A voice-over then provides a 1-800 number. The campaign was created by Ammirati & Puris/Lintas.
