COMPAQ UNVEILS NEW MACHINES

Compaq Computer Corp. of Houston, Texas has introduced a personal digital assistant to the North American market and added two new notebook computers to its LTE line. The handheld personal digital assistant, called PC Companion, allows users to access, exchange and organize information with Microsoft Windows operating system-based desktop and notebook personal computers. Users can perform activities such as calendar synchronization and electronic mail, and have Internet access. North American print advertising for the PC companion will begin early next year. It will be created by Ammirati & Puris/Lintas of New York. In Canada, the agency's Toronto office will do the media buy. The new notebook computers are called the LTE 5400 and the LTE 5380. The 5400 features a 150 megahertz Pentium processor, a Level-2 cache which improves graphics, 32 megabytes of RAM and a 2.16 gigabyte SMART hard drive. The 5380 is for mobile customers who require access to more data on a notebook using graphics-intensive or spreadsheet applications. Its features include a 12.1-inch 1024 X 768 pixels resolution screen, 16 megabytes of RAM and a 2.16 gigabyte SMART hard drive. SMART hard drives monitor their own health and send warning signals to users or network administrators if they are about to fail. Advertising for these two machines will begin next year. It will be incorporated into advertising for the entire LTE line.
