EUROPE KEEPS ADS DURING KIDS PROGRAMS

An attempt to ban all ads during children's programs in Europe failed in a debate on new broadcasting laws in the European Parliament this week. Members of Parliament threw out three proposed amendments which sought to ban all ad breaks during children's hours. But they did agree to introduce a V-Chip screening device to all TV sets to protect children from sex and violence on TV. Parliament also made some changes to its TV Without Frontiers directive. Pay-TV channels will have to give up exclusive rights to major sporting events so more people can watch the events for free. Advertising on teleshopping channels has been banned.
