CANADIAN BROADCASTERS REAP PROFITS

Profits for Canadian broadcasters jumped to $40 million in the fiscal year ending Aug. 31, 1995, from $7.1 million the year before according to figures released by Statistics Canada. Revenue also increased 2.5 per cent to $2.7 billion. TV stations fared extremely well. Privately owned stations raked in $44.3 million, while specialty and pay services grabbed $74 million in pre-tax profit. Radio's performance was less spectacular. While FM radio stations' profits rose to $38.5 million, AM broadcasters lost $38.3 million. FM radio also outperformed AM in the crucial area of audience numbers, posting an increase, while listener numbers for AM declined.
