SUN RELEASES NETWORK COMPUTER
By Adnews Staff
Sun Microsystems Inc. of California will bring a network computer to the North American market in December. Called the Javastation, the system will operate without a hard drive. Instead of downloading programs from their own computer, Javastation users will retrieve software from either the Internet or a file server. They can then work on the software, using their computer's random access memory. Any file saving would be stored on the server computer. While the new system will cost about the same as a normal personal computer with a hard drive, businesses can save money on computer management costs. Instead of having to service and upgrade a gaggle of computers spread throughout an office, businesses with the Javastation can concentrate their network management efforts on the server computer. In Canada, national print advertising will promote the Javastation beginning later this month. The ads were created by J. Walter Thompson Co. Ltd. of New York.
