Alberta Securities Commission begins fraud awareness campaign

The Calgary-based Alberta Securities Commission has begun an awareness campaign intended to educate consumers in the province about investment fraud. The effort also focuses on the resources available from the commission that consumers can use to protect themselves. The campaign, which will run until the end of March 2015, centres on a website at <http://www.checkfirst.ca>, which describes various warning signs of a fraudulent investment offer. The campaign will begin with a "Trick or Treat" event in Edmonton today at City Centre Mall, at which representatives of the commission will distribute information and Halloween candy.

"In investing, knowledge is power," said Alison Trollope, director of communications and investor education at the commission. "There is no better tool to prevent being tricked by fraudsters than education and research. Many people feel alone when investing. We want them to know that the ASC has resources available to help them make informed investment decisions and protect their financial future."

The Alberta Securities Commission is the regulatory agency responsible for administering the province's securities laws.
