COFFEE AND BAGEL COMPANIES TEAM UP

Last week The Second Cup Ltd. has joined forces with The Great Canadian Bagel, Ltd. The specialty coffee retailer injected $6.5 million into the bagel maker last week. The money will be used to fund future growth of The Great Canadian Bagel. The two companies will also accelerate a twinning program that will see the companies operating joint outlets. The duo already operates three shared locations in Ontario and Alberta. The two hope to open six more shared locations within the next six to 12 months. Once the twinning concept becomes established, consumers can expect to see advertising promoting the combined operations. In Canada, Durnan Communications of Toronto creates The Second Cup's advertising. David Cairns and Company of Toronto does the media buying. FC&D Advertising Inc. of Toronto handles advertising for The Great Canadian Bagel. Second Cup and Great Canadian Bagel have yet to decide which agency will handle advertising for the joint locations.
