Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada forms in Ottawa

The Canadian Co-operative Association and le Conseil canadien de la coopération et mutualité have formed a new combined organization called Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada. The national, bilingual association, based in Ottawa, will represent 9,000 co-operatives with a total membership of 18 million in the finance, insurance, agri-food, wholesale, retail, housing, health and service sectors. The organization will work to support the development of co-operatives and to advocate on their behalf to the federal government.
"The creation of CMC is the result of years of discussions about the benefits of national solidarity of our two organizations," said Léo Leblanc, president of the association. "Imagine the potential of having all co-op leaders working together in unison to strengthen the co-operative economy. Co-operative and mutual businesses exist in every corner of the country and in every sector of the economy. Their well being is important to every Canadian. Having all of our deeply skilled co-operative communities working together not only strengthens the co-operative movement, it strengthens Canada too."
