Canadian Multicultural Radio begins HD broadcast

Toronto-based Canadian Multicultural Radio has launched what it describes as the first HD Radio broadcasting service in Canada. HD Radio is a technology from Ibiquity Digital of Columbia, MD that allows AM or FM radio stations to transmit additional audio and data using a digital signal along with the standard analog signal. Canadian Multicultural Radio station 101.3 FM in Toronto will use the technology on an experimental basis to broadcast 24-hour programming in Tamil on a service designated HD2. The station also intends to launch a combined Hindi and Urdu service on HD3 and a Punjabi service on HD4. The pilot program will run for one year.

"My team and I wanted to mark 2014, our 10th year of broadcast, with something special, innovative and trendsetting," said Stanislaus Antony, chairman and CEO of Canadian Multicultural Radio. "That's when we boldly decided to give HD Radio technology a shot. To think that out of some 675 commercial radio stations operating in Canada, CMR is the first to launch additional HD programming gives me immense pride."

Canadian Multicultural Radio received approval from the CRTC to experiment with the technology in 2013. As part of the agreement, it will report to the commission on the results of the test program.
