Ontario Nurses' Association conducts influenza campaign
By Adnews Staff
The Ontario Nurses' Association has begun an advertising campaign in that province that "calls for an end to the stigmatization of nurses who choose not to have a flu vaccine," according to the organization. The campaign also urges the provincial government to develop a comprehensive policy that would fight the spread of influenza.
The campaign takes the form of localized radio advertising in a number of Ontario communities. The ads use the copy, "It takes more than a shot in the arm."
"As registered nurses, we know that science shows that the effectiveness of the flu vaccine varies between just 40 and 60 percent," said association president Linda Haslam-Stroud. "Yet a handful of Ontario hospitals are trying to coerce nurses into having a flu vaccine or be publicly stigmatized if they choose not to. We dedicate our lives to caring for our patients. Hospitals such as these, which are coercing our nurses, are doing a grave disservice to the community."
The Ontario Nurses' Association is a union representing 60,000 registered nurses and health professionals, as well as 14,000 nursing students.
