THOMSON SELLING MORE DAILIES

Toronto-based Thomson Corp. is selling 29 U.S. dailies. Five of the papers, as well as 10 non-dailies were sold last week to MediaNews Inc. of Colorado. They included four California dailies: the Pasadena Star-News, the Whittier Daily News, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and the Eureka Times-Standard. The fifth daily is the Evening Sun in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Other papers on the chopping block include the Herald Palladium, Daily Telegram, Daily Press and Daily News, all in Michigan. Thomson has been selling off newspapers in North America over the past couple of years to re-position itself as a marketing and communications company.
