Report: Television industry 2012 revenues

The CRTC has released its 2012 report on the financial performance of Canadian television services. Cable companies reported revenues of $11.6 billion in 2012, drawn from basic and non-basic television services as well as Internet and telephone services. This represents an increase of 5.7% from the previous year. Operating expenses were up 5.8%, resulting in level profits of $2.6 billion. The number of Canadian households subscribing to basic cable increased by 2% to 8.7 million. Satellite company revenue decreased by 2% from $2.55 billion in 2011 to $2.5 billion in 2012. Operating expenses also declined from $1.9 billion to $1.7 billion, resulting in increased of $389 million versus $175 million in 2011. The number of Canadian households subscribing to basic satellite service decreased by 1.8% to 2.8 million. Specialty, pay, pay-per-view and video-on-demand television services generated revenues of $3.97 billion in 2012, an increase of 5.9%. Expenses increased from $2.7 to $2.9 billion, resulting in profits of $934.2 million.
