HEIR APPARENT NAMED FOR TOP JOB AT JWT

Chris Jones has taken the job of co-president of J. Walter Thompson Company Worldwide on his way to to the very top post in the global ad agency. The promotion signals that Jones will replace chairman and chief executive officer Burt Manning. "With this promotion, Chris Jones is clearly on track to become chief executive officer of JWT Company Worldwide," says Manning in a release. "I anticipate that this would occur within the next two years." Jones is moving up from managing director of multinational accounts, leaving William Eccleshare as his successor in London. Jones will now share global corporate stewardship with Peter Schweitzer, who remains as president of the world-wide operation and head of the Ford account, and Lewis Trencher, the chief operating officer. Jones began his advertising career with Saatchi and Saatchi in 1977, where he worked on accounts for companies such as Proctor and Gamble and Rowntree Macintosh. In 1984, he moved to JWT/London as a group account director. By 1988 Jones had become managing director of JWT/London, and in 1990 he was appointed chief executive. He joined the worldwide board of JWT in 1989, and in 1992 he became a member of the worldwide executive group.
