COMPANY OFFERS REVAMPED EGGS

Smart Eggs, a Winnipeg-based food distributor, has developed a brand of egg that has the natural oil of its yolk replaced with canola oil. The company says this results in 95% less cholesterol, 87% less saturated fat and a third less calories than normal eggs. The replacement process was developed by Winnipeg scientists. Smart Eggs owns the North American rights to the self-titled product. The eggs have been approved by both Agriculture Canada and Health and Welfare Canada and were test-launched in Winnipeg last spring. General manager Ernie McIvor told Adnews this week that the product will be marketed in California once the company gets U.S. regulatory approval. U.S. advertising would be limited to in-store demos and would be handled by a California firm that has not been disclosed. In Canada, Smart Eggs are currently available in Winnipeg and are advertised via in-store demos handled in-house.
