Report: Online video viewing in Canada

Toronto-based ComScore Canada has released a report on Canadian online video viewing. According to the firm's data, 21 million Canadians watched approximately 3.1 billion videos online during the month of February 2009. This represents approximately 88% of all Canadian Internet users. The average viewer spent 10 hours watching online videos that month, an increase of 53% from last year. Websites operated by Google, which include YouTube.com, accounted for 52% of all videos watched. Microsoft websites accounted for 1.8% of viewings, followed by Yahoo-operated sites at 1.5%. The most popular Canadian video sites are those operated by CTVglobemedia, which attracted 0.8% of viewings. "Canada's high broadband penetration and tech savvy Internet users make it an optimal environment for online video to flourish," said Bryan Segal, sales vice-president at ComScore Canada. "The combined forces of reach, high engagement and sight, sound and motion make online video a particularly attractive brand-building vehicle for online advertisers."
