Waste Reduction Week awareness campaign in preparation

The Toronto-based Waste Reduction Week in Canada Program will conduct an awareness campaign in October featuring Oscar the Grouch as its spokescharacter. The Muppet will appear in two television public service announcements as well as posters and public relations materials intended to encourage families and businesses to participate in Waste Reduction Week activities. The initiative will run from Oct. 19 to 25. Waste Reduction Week is conducted by a group of 13 recycling councils and associated organizations nationally. The program aims to inform and engage Canadians about the environmental and social ramifications of wasteful practices. "I can't think of anyone better to represent the need for increased waste reduction and recycling than Oscar the Grouch," said Jo-Anne St. Godard, a member of the national committee for the program and the executive director of the Recycling Council of Ontario. "Oscar is one of the most beloved television personalities. His broad appeal will elevate Waste Reduction Week to new heights and help get everyone excited about doing their part."
