SUBWAY STOPS PROPOSED AS SELLING SITES

The Montreal transit commission is ready to turn its subway stops into theme sites for marketers. La Société de transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal (STCUM) is willing to take a subway station and call it the telecommunications stop, for example. Different companies involved in that industry, such as Bell or Teleglobe, could then run theme events to promote their goods and services in the station. A neighborhood could adopt a station; merchants in the Italian community could rent a location and set up shops. The commission is also considering renting ad space on the sides of subway cars. Altogether, the STCUM hopes to bring in another $2 million in annual revenues with these schemes, reports the Montreal business tabloid Les Affaires .
