Government of Ontario begins Aboriginal peoples anti-smoking campaign

The Government of Ontario has begun a public awareness campaign called “What You Do Matters” intended to encourage members of the Aboriginal community to quit smoking. According to the province’s Ministry of Health Promotion, this is the first such campaign aimed specifically at this community. The campaign consists of 30-second radio commercials and print ads, as well as posters and pamphlets in Band offices, Friendship Centres, health centres and other locations. “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and we're determined to work with Aboriginal communities to make a difference,” said Minister of Health Promotion Jim Watson. “The campaign is a call to action for each individual, family and community to help improve their health environment and the quality of life for all Aboriginal peoples.” According to the ministry, the rate of smoking among Aboriginal peoples can be three times the provincial average.
