HDTV Networks plans national high definition broadcast television service

Vancouver-based HDTV Networks has submitted an application to the CRTC for a license to operate a national over-the-air high definition broadcast television service. The company is a subsidiary of CSR Investments, which also controls Canadian Satellite Radio. The proposed free service would deliver programming to Canada’s eight largest English television markets: Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. The programming would consist of original productions along with Canadian and international content. “Canadians are drastically falling behind in HDTV technology and it is critical that as a country we deliver high-definition programming around the clock to all Canadians,” said John Bitove, CEO of HDTV Networks. “Our broadcast system needs to stay relevant to consumer needs and offer the latest in technology at no cost to the public.”
