Anti-smoking campaigns begin in Ontario

The Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion began two campaigns yesterday to encourage people in that province to quit smoking. The first is a mass media public education campaign called "You Have It In You." Information packages will be distributed in newspapers. Television, radio and Internet advertising will also be used. The campaign will also support the second program, called the "Driven to Quit Challenge," which is being conducted by the Canadian Cancer Society. This effort offers incentives to smokers to quit. "These two campaigns reflect an understanding that the addiction to nicotine is one of the toughest there is to break," said Minister of Health Promotion Jim Watson. "I believe they will strike the right motivational chord with smokers and empower them to quit."
