CRTC DENIES GENEX COMMUNICATIONS LICENCE RENEWAL

The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission has decided not to renew the broadcasting licence of Genex Communications. The licence was for the operation of CHOI-FM, a French-language commercial radio station in Quebec, acquired by Genex in 1997. In its decision, the commission cited Genex's failure to comply with the Radio Regulations 1986 as well as the station's Code of Ethics as reasons for its decision. The commission also noted that Genex's programming did not meet the objectives of the broadcasting policy for Canada set out in the Broadcasting Act. The CRTC had previously renewed Genex's license for CHOI-FM for two years in 2002. In a separate notice, the CRTC has also issued a call for applications for broadcasting licences to operate a new French-language FM station in Quebec. The deadline for submitting applications is Oct. 11.
