QUEBEC HARDWARE STORES ADOPT ACE NAME

Hardware chain Ace, owned in Canada by Sodisco-Howden Group of Montreal, is preparing to move into Quebec. Sodisco-Howden will convert its approximately 40 Ferplus and Bâtitout stores in that province into Ace Quincaillerie and Ace Matériaux stores. This is part of the company's plan to have 200 stores nationally by the end of 2004. The chain will position these stores as an alternative to big box home improvement retailers. "We want to uphold the tradition of the local hardware store, where the customers have a special relationship with the merchant-owner," said Sodisco-Howden business development manager Lucie Désilets. The company also operates hardware stores under the names PRO and Do-it.
