EUROPEAN STATES COULD GET RIGHT TO BAN TV ADS

A committee of the European Parliament in Brussels has voted to give member states the right to ban ads from outside their borders if they disapprove of them. Advertising Age reports that lobbyists for the broadcasting and advertising industries are confident that the committee's amendment to the TV Without Frontiers directive will be thrown out on either legal or political grounds. It proposes that local governments be allowed to require TV stations to obey local ad laws covering pharmaceuticals, alcoholic drinks and any products harmful to children.
