GAMBLING COUNCIL BEGINS STUDENT AWARENESS PROGRAM

The Toronto-based Responsible Gambling Council (Ontario) has created an awareness program for post-secondary students. "Know the Score" is intended to educate students about the risks of out-of-control gambling. A recent study by the council and the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse placed 18 to 24 years olds among the highest risk groups for developing gambling problems. George James, director of communications for the council, said the program was designed knowing there was not a lot of information about responsible gambling available for this demographic. "Know the Score" will initially take place at eight Ontario campuses from January to March. Students participating in the program take part in a campus-wide scavenger hunt for answers to questions about gambling. Answers are displayed on various media such as posters and coasters in campus locations including residences, pubs and health service centres. The "Know the Score" program and supporting materials were created in-house by the council.
