By Adnews Staff
The Vancouver-based Sport Fishing Institute of British Columbia has received $350,000 from Fisheries and Oceans Canada to partially fund a marketing campaign promoting recreational fishing in BC. The institute has also received funding from Fisheries Renewal BC, Western Economic Diversification, Tourism BC and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries coming to a total for 2001/2002 of $960,000. Those funds will pay for a publicity and marketing campaign consisting of advertising in major US and Canadian newspapers and sport fishing magazines, encouraging the coverage of BC fishing by television, magazines and newspapers, attending sport fishing and outdoor shows in North America and enhancing the institutes web site at <http://www.sportfishing.bc.ca>. The aim of the program is to promote various BC angling opportunities and counter the perception that the coast is not open for recreational fishing. "This program is valuable because of the impact of fishing on the coast of BC," said the institutes executive director Tom Bird. "Fishermen need to know that we have wonderful opportunities here for many different sport fishing experiences." The Sport Fishing Institute of BC is a registered non-profit organization. This is the fourth year it has run this marketing campaign.
