HOME BAKING ON THE RISE

The Canadian home baking market grew 5% for the year ending Nov. 11, with yeast getting the biggest rise, according to Nielsen Marketing Research. Its sales grew 24% for the year, while ready-to-serve icing was a distant second with a 9% growth. Flour was third with an 8% growth, and dry cookie mixes followed with 7%. Muffin mixes and tea biscuit mixes were tied with each having a 4% growth in sales. Brownie and dessert bar mixes showed the biggest drop in sales with an 8% decrease. The home baking market was almost $300 million in the past year.
