MANCHU WOK USES ONLINE CONTEST TO BUILD DATABASE

Quick-service Chinese restaurant chain Manchu Wok, based in Markham, ON, is holding a contest called "Wok the Web and Connect to Win." The marketing initiative is designed to build a customer database for the chain by inviting customers to register to win prizes from JVC. During the eight-week contest 1.9 million Connect to Win cards will be distributed to customers who purchase a combo and soft drink at a participating location in North America. To enter, customers go to <http://www.manchuwok.com> or call a 1-877 number and enter the personal identification number on their cards. To be entered in the contest, customers must submit their name, home address and e-mail address. At that time, customers can also subscribe to Manchu Wok's electronic newsletter WOK Talk which is distributed monthly to customers to inform them of upcoming specials and promotions. Daily prizes will be awarded by a random draw. A grand prize draw will be held in the beginning of October for a JVC home theatre system. All customers who enter the contest can download a coupon redeemable for a free soft drink with their next meal purchase. According to Manchu Wok, the list of customer addresses will be used for direct mail and e-mail marketing programs at the national and local levels as well as marketing initiatives aimed at Internet users or frequent customers. Riverview Ideas Ltd. of Paris, ON, developed the "WOK To Win" contest idea and supporting POP materials. Public relations for Manchu Wok are handled by OverCat Communications of Toronto.
