MCNEIL SWALLOWS MEAD JOHNSON'S VIACTIV BUSINESS

McNeil Consumer Healthcare, based in Guelph, ON, is acquiring the Viactiv nutritional supplements business from Mead Johnson Nutritionals of Ottawa. Financial details were not disclosed. McNeil Consumer Healthcare manufacturers over-the-counter drugs such as Tylenol. Mead's Viactiv Soft Chews are a calcium supplement available in chocolate, caramel and mochaccino flavors. According to McNeil president Jerry Norskog, "With an aging population, maintaining bone strength becomes an increasingly important health issue. Viactiv Soft Chews give us an established entry in the growing calcium supplement category." Ad plans for the Viactiv brand, currently handled by Bensimon Byrne D'Arcy of Toronto, have not yet been determined.
