ULTRAMAR PRINTING ERROR MAKES 100,000 CONSUMERS GRAND PRIZE WINNERS

Montreal-based gasoline retailer Ultramar Ltd. is using newspapers ads to apologize to customers in New Brunswick. A printing error in Ultramar's Reveal A Deal coupon booklets made 100,000 customers grand prize winners of $1,500 in free gas. Under the contest rules, only three grand prizes were available to be won. "This is an unfortunate situation and we're sorry for any inconvenience this causes our customers and associates," said Jean Bernier, president of Ultramar. The printing error appeared in 100,000 copies of the 314,000 booklets distributed in New Brunswick. According to the company, holders of Reveal A Deal coupons are still eligible for gasoline discounts. Also available to be won are ten $500 prizes and 1,500 $5 prizes. Each booklet also contains ten coupons for $1 or $0.75 discounts. The Reveal A Deal contest will continue at participating stations until September 3, at which time a draw will be held to determine the three grand prize winners. Television and radio advertising as well as POS materials are promoting contest. Advertising for Ultramar is done by Palm Publicite Marketing of Montreal.
