ASC RELEASES RESULTS OF 2000 AD COMPLAINT REPORT

Advertising Standards Canada has released the results of its 2000 Ad Complaint report. In total, 1,143 complaints were received for 815 advertisements. Of the total number of complaints received, 817 complaints for 521 ads were evaluated by the ASC. Of those, 289 complaints about 139 ads were forwarded to the Consumer Response Council or the Advisory Panel on Gender Portrayal. The councils/panels upheld 180 complaints about 71 ads. The Food category received the highest number of complaints (137) followed by the Alcoholic Beverage category (100). Television advertising remained the number one medium to attract the most complaints (595) followed by newspaper advertising (183). Twenty-four advertisers were named in the report. An additional 35 unnamed advertisers were cited but withdrew or changed their ads after the ASC advised them a complaint had been received.
