JUDGE OPENS LIMIT ON THIRD PARTY ADVERTISING
By Adnews Staff
As the November 27 federal election approaches, an Alberta judge has temporarily lifted spending limits on third party advertising in that province during election campaigns. A report in the National Post said Justice Robert Cairns handed down an injunction Monday allowing third parties to spend more than the $152,000 allowed nationally or $3,000 allowed in any one constituency during the course of an election campaign. The decision follows a challenge from the National Citizens Coalition. This is the fifth time the group has succeeded in temporarily having the limits lifted. On previous occasions Elections Canada has applied the Alberta rulings in the rest of the country in the interest of national fairness, but the body has not yet made a decision in this case as of press time. Lawyers for the federal government are expected to appeal the Alberta decision.
