CRAYONS NOT SO TASTEFUL NOW
By Adnews Staff
The maker of Crayola crayons is taking its consumers' opinion and noses to heart. Earlier this month, Binney & Smith of Easton, Pennsylvania stopped making crayons that smelled like food and launched a line that smell like things such as a new car, leather and dirt. This was the company's answer to consumers who called with concerns that children may put the food-scented crayons in their mouths. The crayons release their scents when used to color something. Binney & Smith Canada, based in Lindsay, Ont., says it hasn't received any phone calls about the food-scented crayons but is encouraging consumers to call its 1-800 number to say whether or not they would prefer the new scents. If the answer is yes, the company will follow its U.S. counterpart. North American advertising for Binney & Smith is done by Avrett Free & Ginsberg of New York. In Canada, media is handled by Media Buying Services of Toronto.
