SONY TO MAKE PERSONAL COMPUTERS
By Adnews Staff
Sony Corp. of New York has decided to elbow its way into the personal computer market next fall with a full line of machines. The company is not sure when the computers will come north of the border, Sony Canada vice-president Doug Willox told Adnews yesterday. U.S.-based Intel Corp. will provide the main circuitry for the computers. Sony will design the case and handle marketing and distribution. Sony has already dipped its toes in the computer market with a hand-held computer, called Magic Link, which can send and receive e-mail and get paging messages. Sony manufactures laptop computers for Dell Computer Corp. and makes some of Apple Computer's Powerbook machines. In addition, Sony has a computer peripheral business which includes monitors, speakers and CD-ROM drives.
