TELUS ACQUIRES CLEARNET

Telus Corporation, based in Burnaby, B.C., will acquire Toronto-based Clearnet Communications for $6.6 billion. The acquisition will combine the wireless operations of both telecommunications companies to create what the two are calling the largest wireless company in Canada. The new entity will be led by Clearnet president and chief executive George Cope. Telus' cellular operations includes digital PCS and wireless data services. Clearnet's two digital networks, Clearnet PCS and The Mike Network, offer wireless communication services to both personal and business customers. The deal is expected to be complete by October.
