BEDARD CHEWS ON OUT-OF-COURT SETTLEMENT
By Adnews Staff
An out-of-court settlement in the case of Olympic athlete Myriam Bedard against BBDO Canada Inc., Wrigley Canada Inc. and parent company WM Wrigley Jr. Company has been reached. Bedard launched a law suit against the chewing gum manufacturer and its advertising agency earlier this year when a computer illustration of Bedard was included in a transit advertising campaign that ran in several Quebec markets for Wrigley's Spearmint, Doublemint, Juicy Fruit and Big Red brands. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. The campaign, which was designed to illustrate the passage of time from 1984, was terminated when Bedard attorney's sent a letter to BBDO late last year. At the time, the agency offered Bedard financial compensation but discussions were ended abruptly. Bedard said in a statement she is satisfied with the settlement and wishes to put the incident behind her. Both BBDO and Wrigley Canada apologized to Bedard for any distress or damage that may have been caused by the unauthorized use of her picture.
