NORTEL NETWORKS CLARIFYING SECOND WAVE OF E-BUSINESS

Nortel Networks of Brampton, Ontario has announced a US$2.1 billion deal in which it will acquire Clarify Inc. of San Jose, California. Clarify provides front office solutions for e-business. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2000, when Clairfy will become a wholly-owned subsidary of Nortel Networks. The combined companies hope to drive a "second wave" of e-business, focusing on the customer by enabling personalized interaction over the Internet. Once the acquisition is complete, Clarify will remain headquartered in San Jose and Nortel will have more than 4,000 employees in Silcon Valley. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals as well as Clarify's shareholders approval.
