SUN MEDIA ACQUIRES THE BEACON HERALD

Sun Media Corporation of Toronto has acquired the last remaining independent daily newspaper in Ontario. The Beacon Herald in Stratford was bought from the Dingman family which has been in the newspaper business in Stratford for 113 year. The Beacon Herald will be managed through Bowes Publishers Ltd., Sun Media's community newspaper division and will be the 16th Canadian daily in Sun Media's portfolio. "It was a difficult decision to sell the newspaper, but we are pleased to be joining the Bowes group," said Charles Dingam, publisher and editor of The Beacon Herald. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close shortly. The Beacon Herald has a daily circulation of approximately 12,500. Sun Media Corporation's properties include eight urban daily newspapers and seven community daily newspapers. It operates 152 weeklies and buyer's guides and 19 specialty publications.
