TTC CAMPAIGNS FOR A PIECE OF ONTARIO GAS TAX
By Adnews Staff
The Toronto Transit Commission launched an ad campaign in that city this week to put public pressure on the Ontario provincial government to cut the TTC a slice of the revenues from gasoline taxes. According to the cash-strapped public transit organization, a one-cent per litre gas tax across the Greater Toronto Area would generate around $50 million per year. Both Vancouver and Montreal draw funding for their public transit systems from gas taxes. "It's essential that the TTC have a stable funding base and there's a strong precedence for provincial or state funding for public transit," said TTC chair Howard Moscoe. "It's about time the TTC got a share of the province's gas tax revenue." The "Share the Gas Tax" ad campaign includes radio spots, which will run for three weeks, as well as flyers and posters on subway cars and platforms. This part of the campaign will run for a minimum of one month. The TTC's agency of record is Communiqué of Toronto, but this campaign is being handled the commission's in-house designers.
