CHINESE PC BRANDS GAINING GROUND
By Adnews Staff
China's local personal computer marketers are beginning to take market share from international brands, according to a report in Business Weekly. The top four vendors in China increased PC shipments by 65% in the first three quarters of 1998, when compared to the same period a year earlier. The top four international vendors, International Business Machines Corp., Hewlett-Packard, Compaq Computer Corp. and Toshiba, increased their shipments in China by 14% over the same period. Because of the jump in shipments by local vendors, they increased their collective market share from 18% to 23%, while the market share for the four international computer makers dropped from 21% to 19%. Overall, China's PC market saw a 28% year-on-year growth in shipments for the first three quarters of the year.
