TOYOTA UNVEILS CARS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

Toyota Canada of Toronto has unveiled a new line of cars designed specifically for young, new car buyers. In the line are the XYR sports coupe and the ECHO. Toyota is also expanding its luxury line of cars with the Lexus IS, a compact sedan.

The XYR was designed to convey the look and feel of a race car cockpit. It has a 1.8 litre twin cam-engine, and the VVTL-i induction system. The ECHO was also designed for strong youth appeal. Included in its design is a 1.5 litre 4-cylinder engine. ECHO's design also provides increased interior length, combining the low step-in height of a sedan with a high seating position of a mini-van. And to appeal to the young buyers, ECHO features an audio system, abundant storage space, CD bins, large door pockets and split glove boxes. The Lexus IS, is also in line with Lexus' efforts to attract younger buyers. The IS will be brought to North America from the European market in mid-2000. For North America, the IS will have a 6-cylinder engine featuring variable valve timing and rear-wheel drive configuration. Aerodynamic shielding will create a flat-bottom ground effect similar to that of a race car. Advertising for Toyota Canada's cars is handled by Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising of Toronto.
