SECOND CUP BUYING ANOTHER U.S. COFFEE CHAIN

Second Cup specialty coffee retailer is expanding again in the U.S. The Toronto-based company is buying Gloria Jean's Gourmet Coffees from Brothers Gourmet Coffees of Boca Raton, Florida. Gloria Jean's operates 224 franchised and company-owned specialty coffee shops in the U.S. The deal is expected to close next month after a definitive purchase agreement and regulatory approvals. Earlier this year, Second Cup bought Diedrich Coffee of California and merged it with the Coffee Plantation chain based in Phoenix, Arizona. Currently, it operates 235 franchised and company-owned stores in Canada and the southwestern United States.
