SOUTH AFRICA CLOSE TO BANNING TOBACCO ADS

South Africa is one step away from banning tobacco advertising and outlawing smoking in public places. The Tobacco Products Control Amendment Bill has to pass the National Council of the Provinces this week before President Nelson Mandela signs it into law. The tobacco industry says the bill will cause about 15,000 people to lose their jobs in the industry and related fields if ads and sponsorships are banned. The government says people will spend their money on other goods and services, thereby creating new jobs in other fields. About seven million of South Africa's 40,000 inhabitants smoke. The tobacco industry spends about $68 million a year on advertising and promotions.
