ALTERNATIVE MAGAZINE FEST

Broken Pencil magazine will host its annual alternative magazine festival in Toronto on Oct. 4. Called Canzine 98, the event will feature over 150 underground periodicals such as Fish Piss and Infiltration: the zine of going places you aren't supposed to go. In addition, there will be a panel discussion entitled: Are Zines the New Literature? Self publishing and the Death of the Traditional Press. Speakers at the discussion will include Toronto Star small press columnist Bert Archer, The Canadian Journal of Contemporary Literary Stuff editor Tamara Fairchild, Rush Hour Revisions Press editor Vern Smith and House of Anansi Press editor Martha Sharpe. The event will also feature a reading series and open stage, as well as a concert. Sponsors of the event include: The Toronto Arts Council, Rickard's Red beer, Doormouse Distribution, Pages Books and Magazines, Sonic Unyon Records, The Canadian Magazine Publishing Association, Coach House Printing and Books, Arts Week Toronto, Brave New Waves, Exclaim, CIUT 89.5 FM and Insomniac Press.
