COMPAQ ACQUIRES TRADEMARK AND NAME FOR SEARCH ENGINE
By Adnews Staff
Compaq Computer Corp. of Houston has bought the rights to the AltaVista trademark and the www.altavista.com domain name from AltaVista Technology of Campbell, California. Compaq can now use the address for its AltaVista search engine, which it acquired when it bought U.S.-based Digital Equipment Corp. earlier this year. Since Compaq bought Digital, it has been using a more awkward address for its AltaVista site because the other company had secured the rights to the name. There has been an AltaVista search engine in Canada since last January. The search engine is a joint effort between Telus Corp. of Edmonton and AltaVista. The Canadian site offers national access to local Canadian information and a fully bilingual search functionality. DoubleClick Canada of Toronto is the international sales agent for the AltaVista Canada Web site.
